Influence of sigma phase content in the pitting corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steels. O. Conejero. Eurocorr 2012.
Precipitation of sigma phase reduces ductility, toughness and corrosion resistance of stainless steels. Sigma phase removes chromium and molybdenum from the matrix. As a result the material becomes susceptible to selective corrosion in a similar manner to sensitization.
In this work, a study of the influence of sigma phase on the corrosion performance of AISI 316L austenitic stainless steels was carried out. The study revealed a reduction in pitting corrosion resistance of the steel in a NaCl electrolyte.
